Crossed from South to North via navigable waterways, such as the Rhine and the Ill, traversed East to West by the most ancient of routes, trading developed very early on in the fertile plain of Alsace, together with the dissemination of ideas. Strasbourg, with both a port and a bridge over the Rhine, benefited from all these advantages and prospered.
