Restoration works on the west wall of the southern transept
The west wall of the southern transept shows the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style (late 12th. /early 13th century). The wall is for the most part still in its original form.Based on the preliminary study prepared in 2007 on the restoration and preservation work, the following works will be carried out:-Conservation works, in order to conserve as much of the original wall stone as possible (including the frieze and the staircase towers).
  • Replacement of the balustrade, which is in a very bad state of preservation-Offset of the pinnacle after conservation treatment
  • Renewal of the upper parts of the staircase towers (in accordance with the 19th century plans)

Thanks to the building of the scaffolding structure in February 2008, the observations made for the preliminary study could be completed. A large part relates to the discovery of colour traces on the exterior walls. Their preservation will be in accordance with the detailed working protocol, which follows analysis and documentation of damage.

The few elements which have to be replaced are precisely measured in order to produce exact copies of them and to restore the finial and the gargoyles several studies were made. Before replacing the new stones, all stone marks will be mapped and the colour traces documented.
